Lot Title: Artist Proof “Islander” Tiki Mug — Otagiri, Final Oceanic Arts Auction Edition

Offered here is a rare Artist Proof edition of the classic Islander Tiki mug, originally produced by Otagiri for the legendary Islander restaurant of Stockton, California (1966–1980). This particular piece was acquired at the final Oceanic Arts auction — an historic event held in conjunction with the release of their commemorative book. The mug is both pictured in the book and catalogued in the official auction guide, affirming its provenance.

This Artist Proof is distinguished by a red “R” hand-painted on the base, marking it as part of a select pre-production run. The mug features a bold and fearsome Tiki head emerging from a stylized pineapple, with the Islander name prominently displayed on the front. The original manufacturer sticker remains intact on the underside.

Condition is excellent, with no cracks or chips. Minimal surface crazing is present — consistent with age and typical of mid-century ceramic production.

The Islander was a landmark of Stockton’s vibrant nightlife scene in the 1970s and early '80s. Acquired by Tommy Lee from famed restaurateur Hop Louie, the venue was designed by architect Warren Wong to evoke the feeling of a shipwreck washed ashore on a tropical beach — an iconic fusion of mid-century Polynesian Pop and architectural whimsy.

This mug is a tangible piece of California Tiki history, made even more significant by its association with the closing chapter of Oceanic Arts.
